Elevate Your Professional Image: The Importance of Updating Your Headshot

| 3 min read

When was the last time you updated your headshot photo?

It’s a question many of us overlook, but the impact it can have on your professional image is immense. Your headshot isn’t just a picture; it’s often the first impression you make on potential clients or employers. So, let’s take a moment to reflect on your current headshot situation, which of the following resonates with you:

  • "I have to update that? Can’t I keep my photo from my 20’s?"
  • "I can’t remember, it’s been too long."
  • "Before the world shut down for a bit, so 4 years ago or so."
  • "Last year in 2023."
  • "Last month, I always update my headshot each quarter to 6 months."

As a general rule of thumb, it's recommended to refresh your professional headshot at least every two years. Fashion trends and hairstyles evolve over time, and an outdated image can stand out for the wrong reasons.

For more insights on "How Often Should You Update Your Professional Headshot and Business Images," check out this blog post I wrote—it's a quick 4-minute read.

Here's a pro tip: Plan ahead. By creating a visual strategy, you can capture all the photos you need for the rest of the year in one go, saving time and potentially reducing costs. It's a win-win!

Speaking of headshots, I recently had a photoshoot with my talented friend Anne-Marie May of Welcome Abroad Photography. She captured a few stunning shots, and I’ve asked my newsletter readers to help me chose.  Stay tuned in the next few days to see which they selected:

two images, the left has a woman in a grey blazer smiling at the camera, the right has the same woman in a different pos facing the camera and holding a camera in her hands.

My email newsletter recipients receive business visibility and image tips straight to their email and before it’s shared on socials or my website.  I send the emails at most once a week, schedule allowing.  If you’d like to get first dibs at the business visibility tips and help me choose my next headshot to use in the future, then click here to get on the list.

Map of Europe with the words "Where's Bonnie" inside of Europe

If you've been following my journey, you'll know that I've traded Canadian winter for a European one. I've been exploring different landscapes, environments, cultures, and, of course, enjoying plenty of interesting food.

In case you're curious, the European winter weather has been akin to a Canadian April—lots of rainy, overcast days, a surprise snowfall in the Spanish Mountains, and sudden bursts of sunny warmth.

Here's a glimpse of my current view: a charming café and sandwich chain in Madrid called Rodilla. They offer plenty of tables with outlets to power your laptop and complimentary "wee-fee" (as they pronounce it in Spain).

two photos, on the left is a laptop beside a tea, on the right is a tea beside a pastry and sandwich

I'll be back in Ontario come April, and I'm already scheduling business image and headshot sessions. If your headshot is older than two years, or you are interested in updating your professional photos, I'd love to connect with you and discuss how we can capture the perfect shot for your business needs.

And remember, I'm here to support you. Whether you need assistance with your visual strategy or have questions about your headshot, don't hesitate to reach out.
