Portraits With Purpose: Celebrating Strength, Identity & Community Through Climbing Portraits

| 2 min read

I had the incredible honour of photographing 54 climbers during True North Climbing’s 15th Anniversary Birthday Party. I brought my portable studio to the gym, not just to take photos, but to offer something deeper: a moment for each person to see themselves in their strength, in their identity, and in their element.

Why I Did It

As a visibility strategist and photographer, my mission is to help businesses and people feel seen and confident in front of the camera. I’m also a climber, and I know firsthand how rare it is to get a great photo of ourselves doing what we love. Most climbing images are taken mid-route, from behind, and rarely capture the power, personality, and presence that make each climber unique.

Volunteering my time for this event was twofold:

  1. To give back to the climbing community that means so much to me,
  2. And to share a sample of what it’s like to work with me, being guided, posed, and photographed with professional care and intention.

What I Offered

Each participant received one professionally edited portrait. Some opted for bold, gear-forward climbing identity photos, while others chose a clean, headshot-style image, perfect for LinkedIn, Instagram, or just a photo that finally feels like them.

I photographed climbers of all levels, ages, and backgrounds, and each session was about celebrating who they are, not just what grade they climb.

One stand out moment? Capturing Evelynn, an incredibly strong climber, who chose to showcase her strength, proudly featuring her powerful arms in her portrait. Helping women feel proud of their physical strength and break away from outdated norms around how we “should” look is something I care deeply about. That moment made my heart so happy.

The Response

The energy and enthusiasm were incredible, 54 climbers stepped in front of my camera! I've already received amazing feedback, including kind messages and a thoughtful Google Review from a fellow creative professional.

Several people said it was their first time ever having a proper portrait taken, and that they finally saw themselves the way others see them: strong, confident, and unique.

A Huge Thank You

To the team at True North Climbing, thank you for supporting me in bringing this vision to life. This gym is more than just a part-time workplace to me; it’s home. Thank you for trusting me to contribute to such a meaningful milestone.

What’s Next?

If you're part of a community, studio, or event that would love a portrait experience like this, whether climbing-related or not, I’d love to connect. My work blends personal connection with professional polish, so your community walks away with not just a great image, but a great experience, too.
